Pain is a distressing sensation caused by stimuli from injured parts of the body.

"an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with, or resembling that associated with, actual or potential tissue damage."

It is a symptom of an underlying condition, thus should not be treated as the disease. It is the body's protective mechanism:

  • motivates the individual to withdraw from damaging situations
  • protect a damaged body part while it heals
  • avoid similar experiences in the future

Most pain resolves once the damage has healed or the destructive stimulus is removed, at times it persist. Sometimes pain is felt without apparent stimulus or damage.

It is the most common reason consult to physicians. It can interfere with quality of life and daily functioning of a person.
