Afixostat (Febuxostat)

Febuxostat is a non-purine xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitor.

In early 2008, the European Commission approved febuxostat for treating chronic hyperuricemia and gout. The following year, the FDA authorized its use for long-term management of hyperuricemia in adults with gout who cannot tolerate or do not respond adequately to allopurinol.

Gout, a type of arthritis, results from uric acid crystal buildup in or around joints, causing inflammation and, over time, further crystal deposition in bones, joints, tissues, and organs. Closely linked to hyperuricemia, gout is managed by febuxostat through inhibition of the enzyme responsible for uric acid synthesis, thereby lowering serum uric acid levels.
