Mirel (Reteplase)

Reteplase is a thrombolytic drug (clot-dissolving medicine). It’s a genetically engineered form of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA).

🔹 Main use:

1. It is given in emergency treatment of acute myocardial infarction (heart attack).
2. Works by breaking down blood clots that block blood flow to the heart muscle.

🔹 How it works:

1. It activates plasminogen into plasmin, an enzyme that dissolves fibrin, the main protein in blood clots.

🔹 Administration:

1. Given by intravenous injection in a hospital setting, usually in two bolus doses.

🔹 Important notes:

1. Must be given as soon as possible after heart attack symptoms start (ideally within 12 hours).
2. Use is restricted to hospitals/ERs with cardiac monitoring.
3. Contraindications: recent surgery, active bleeding, severe hypertension, history of stroke, etc.
