Aminosteril Infant is an intravenous amino acid solution specifically formulated for the parenteral nutrition of pediatric patients, including premature and newborn infants, babies, and young children. It is used when oral or enteral protein intake is impossible or insufficient.
Uses and Indications
The primary purpose of Aminosteril Infant is to provide a necessary nitrogen source and protein-building substances to support proper organ function, development, and growth in infants. Indications include:
Prophylaxis and treatment of protein deficiency in pediatric patients.
Premature birth and small-for-date syndromes.
Gastro-intestinal diseases and malformations.
Peri-operative nutritional support in pediatric surgery.
Intensive care following burns and severe injuries.
Key Composition
Aminosteril Infant (available in concentrations like 6% and 10%) contains a balanced mixture of essential and non-essential amino acids specifically tailored to pediatric requirements. These include L-leucine, L-isoleucine, L-lysine, L-methionine, L-phenylalanine, L-threonine, L-tryptophan, L-valine, arginine, L-histidine, glycine, L-taurine, L-serine, L-alanine, L-proline, N-acetyl L-tyrosine, and N-acetyl L-cysteine.
Administration and Dosage
Aminosteril Infant is administered via intravenous infusion and should never be self-administered. A doctor or nurse must manage its use.
Dosage: The dosage is determined by the patient's body weight and condition. For example, the maximum daily dose for infants under one year is typically 1.5 to 2.5 grams of amino acids per kg of body weight.
Administration Notes: The infusion must be given at a controlled rate, as too rapid an infusion can lead to amino acid imbalance and loss through the kidneys. The solution and infusion bag should be protected from light during administration to newborns and children under two years of age.
Important Considerations
Prescription Required: This product is a prescription medicine and requires a doctor's valid prescription for purchase.
Contraindications: It is contraindicated in patients with amino acid metabolism disorders, acidosis, hyperhydration (excess body water), and hypokalemia (low potassium levels).
Potential Side Effects: Possible side effects can include metabolic acidosis, hyperammonemia (excess ammonia in the blood), and local reactions like thrombosis (blood clots) at the infusion site.
Safety: The infusion is generally safe when used as advised by a doctor, who will also monitor the infant with routine blood and urine tests during treatment.
For specific medical advice, always consult with a qualified healthcare professional.
