Apixa (Apixaban)
Apixa (Apixaban)
Apixaban is an anticoagulant medication belonging to the class of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), commonly prescribed to reduce the risk of blood clots and stroke in patients with atrial fibrillation, a type of irregular heart rhythm. Unlike traditional anticoagulants like warfarin, apixaban works by directly inhibiting the activity of factor Xa, a key enzyme in the blood clotting cascade, thereby preventing the formation of blood clots. This mechanism of action offers more predictable dosing and fewer interactions with food and other medications compared to warfarin. Apixaban is also used for the treatment and prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in both acute and chronic settings, providing a convenient and effective option for patients requiring anticoagulation therapy.
