Apixaban is an oral anticoagulant belonging to the direct Factor Xa inhibitor class, commonly used to prevent and treat blood clots. By selectively blocking Factor Xa, apixaban reduces thrombin production and prevents the formation of fibrin clots. It is widely prescribed for stroke prevention in patients with non‑valvular atrial fibrillation, as well as for the treatment and secondary prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Compared with traditional anticoagulants like warfarin, apixaban offers predictable dosing, fewer drug‑food interactions, and no routine monitoring requirements. It is also favored for its lower risk of major bleeding in many clinical settings. Apixaban is recommended in major guidelines for long‑term anticoagulation due to its efficacy, safety profile, and convenience.
