Arixtra (Fondaparinux Sodium)

Fondaparinux Sodium is a synthetic and selective Factor Xa inhibitor that prevents thrombin formation and subsequent blood clot development. Unlike heparin, it does not directly affect thrombin (Factor IIa) and has no known effect on platelets, reducing the risk of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT). It is administered subcutaneously and is widely used in hospital and outpatient settings for the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic disorders.

Main Uses:

• Prevention of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients undergoing orthopedic or abdominal surgery
• Treatment of acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) when administered with warfarin or other oral anticoagulants
• Prevention of thromboembolic complications in patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) such as unstable angina or myocardial infarction

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to Fondaparinux or any formulation component
• Severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <30 mL/min)
• Active major bleeding
• Bacterial endocarditis
• Body weight <50 kg (for DVT prophylaxis indication)
