Boostrix (Tetanus+Diptheria+Pertusis Toxoid)
The DPT vaccine, also known as the DTP vaccine, is a combination vaccine that protects against three infectious diseases in humans:
1. Diphtheria: Diphtheria is a bacterial infection that can lead to difficulty breathing, heart failure, paralysis, or even death.
2. Tetanus (Lockjaw): Tetanus enters the body through cuts or wounds and causes painful stiffening of the muscles.
3. Pertussis (Whooping Cough): Pertussis can cause uncontrollable, violent coughing that makes it hard to breathe, eat, or drink. It can be extremely serious, especially in babies and young children, leading to pneumonia, convulsions, brain damage, or death.
Other preparations include
1. Tdap-IPV vaccine: Polio (IPV): Polio, caused by the poliovirus, can lead to paralysis and other serious complications. The inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) provides protection against polio.
2. Hepatitis B Antigen (HepB): Hepatitis B is a viral infection affecting the liver. The HepB component helps prevent hepatitis B.
3. Haemophilus Influenzae Type B (Hib): Hib can cause serious infections, including meningitis. The Hib component protects against Haemophilus influenzae type b.
The vaccine components include diphtheria and tetanus toxoids, along with either killed whole cells of the bacterium that causes pertussis or pertussis antigens. It is typically administered to children between 6 weeks and 6 years of age (before their 7th birthday) to provide immunity against these diseases. Remember to consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice on vaccination.
