Capetero (Capecitabine)

Capecitabine is an oral chemotherapy drug that belongs to the class of antimetabolites. It is a prodrug of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), meaning it is converted into 5-FU in the body, mainly within tumor tissues. This helps target cancer cells more selectively and reduces systemic toxicity compared to direct 5-FU administration.

Main Uses 

Capecitabine is used alone or in combination for the treatment of several cancers, including:

• Colorectal cancer (adjuvant and metastatic)
• Breast cancer (metastatic, often after failure of anthracycline- or taxane-based therapy)
• Gastric cancer
• Pancreatic and other GI cancers (in combination regimens)

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to capecitabine, 5-FU, or any formulation component
• Severe renal impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min)
• Known deficiency of dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) enzyme (risk of severe toxicity)
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding (teratogenic)
