Sevelamer is a medicine used to lower high phosphate levels in the blood for people with chronic kidney disease who are on dialysis. You can only get it with a doctor's prescription.

Sevelamer carbonate works by binding to phosphate in your gut when you eat. This stops the phosphate from being absorbed into your body and helps lower phosphate levels in your blood.

Too much phosphate can pull calcium from your bones, making them weak. High levels of both phosphate and calcium can cause dangerous calcium deposits in your blood vessels, lungs, eyes, and heart, which can increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, or even death over time.

Some side effects of phosphate binders can include:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Indigestion
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Gas and gas pain
  • Changes in the color of your poop
  • Some phosphate binders can raise calcium levels

A study found that certain fish, like Florida pompano and largemouth bass, are good for people with kidney disease. But you should avoid or limit seafood high in sodium, potassium, and phosphorus, like swordfish.

High-phosphorus foods to avoid or limit include:

  • Dairy foods
  • Beans
  • Lentils
  • Nuts
  • Bran cereals
  • Oatmeal
  • Colas and other drinks with phosphate additives
  • Some bottled iced teas
