Duphalac Syrup is a prescription osmotic laxative containing lactulose 3.35g per 5mL, specifically formulated to treat constipation and support digestive health across all age groups. This medication works by drawing water into the intestines, softening stools and promoting regular bowel movements while restoring normal colon rhythm.

Beyond constipation relief, Duphalac Syrup serves multiple therapeutic functions. It gently softens stools for patients with hemorrhoids or those recovering from anal surgery, facilitating easier passage without straining. The medication also effectively manages hepatic encephalopathy by reducing ammonia absorption in the gastrointestinal tract, helping prevent hepatic coma and precoma conditions in patients with liver dysfunction.

Duphalac Syrup is suitable for the entire family, from infants to elderly adults, and is safe for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The convenient liquid formulation allows for flexible, individualized dosing. Adults and adolescents typically start with 15 to 45ml daily, adjusting to a 10 to 25ml maintenance dose. Children aged 7–14 years begin at 15ml daily, reducing to 10–15ml for maintenance. Younger children (1–6 years) take 5–10ml daily, while infants under one year receive up to 5ml daily.

The medication can be taken undiluted or diluted with water or juice, preferably at the same time each day. Drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water daily enhances effectiveness and promotes digestive comfort.

Initial side effects may include gas, bloating, stomach discomfort, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, typically resolving as the body adjusts to treatment. Duphalac Syrup is contraindicated in patients with galactosemia, intestinal obstruction, or bowel perforation. Use with caution in patients with diabetes or those at risk of electrolyte imbalance.
