Ezemibe (Ezetimibe)
Ezemibe (Ezetimibe)
Ezetimibe is a medication primarily used to lower levels of cholesterol in the blood, particularly low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol. It belongs to a class of drugs known as cholesterol absorption inhibitors. Ezetimibe works by reducing the absorption of cholesterol from the intestines, thereby decreasing the amount of cholesterol that enters the bloodstream. By lowering LDL cholesterol levels, ezetimibe helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes, especially in individuals with hypercholesterolemia or those at high risk for cardiovascular disease. Ezetimibe is often prescribed in combination with other cholesterol-lowering medications, such as statins, to achieve optimal lipid control. It is generally well-tolerated, but side effects may include gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea or abdominal pain. As with any medication, it's important to use ezetimibe under the guidance of a healthcare professional and to follow their recommendations regarding dosage and monitoring.
