Gafitero (Gafitinib)

Gefitinib is an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) that selectively inhibits the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). By blocking EGFR signaling, it prevents cancer cell growth, survival, and spread. It is classified as a targeted therapy rather than traditional chemotherapy.

Main Uses

• Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC):
  • First-line treatment in patients with EGFR mutation-positive tumors (exon 19 deletions or exon 21 L858R substitution).
  • Used in advanced or metastatic stages.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to gefitinib or any component of the formulation.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding (can cause fetal harm).
• Use with caution in patients with:
  • Severe hepatic impairment (drug is metabolized in the liver).
  • Severe pulmonary disease (risk of interstitial lung disease, which can be fatal).
  • Eye disorders (rare cases of keratitis have been reported).
