Gemtero (Gemcitabine)

Gemcitabine is a nucleoside analog (antimetabolite) chemotherapy drug. It works by incorporating itself into DNA during replication, leading to chain termination and cell death. It is usually given intravenously and is considered less toxic than some older chemotherapy agents.

Main Uses

Gemcitabine is used alone or in combination for the treatment of several cancers, including:

• Pancreatic cancer (first-line standard therapy)
• Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
• Breast cancer (often with paclitaxel)
• Ovarian cancer (often with carboplatin)
• Bladder cancer

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to gemcitabine or any of its components.
• Severe bone marrow suppression (low blood counts).
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding – contraindicated due to risk of fetal harm.
• Use with caution in patients with:
  • Hepatic or renal impairment
  • Recent radiotherapy (risk of radiation recall and increased toxicity)
