Imatero (Imatinib)

Imatinib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI) used as a targeted cancer therapy. It works by blocking abnormal proteins (such as BCR-ABL) that signal cancer cells to grow and divide. By inhibiting these kinases, imatinib helps stop cancer cell proliferation while having less effect on normal cells compared to traditional chemotherapy.

Main Uses

• Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) – Philadelphia chromosome–positive (Ph+).
• Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) – Ph+ cases.
• Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors (GISTs) – with c-KIT (CD117) positivity.
• Myelodysplastic/Myeloproliferative diseases (MDS/MPD) with PDGFR mutations.
• Hypereosinophilic syndrome (HES) and Chronic eosinophilic leukemia (CEL).
• Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP).

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to imatinib or any component of the formulation.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding – risk of fetal harm.
• Use with caution in patients with:
  • Severe liver impairment (drug is metabolized hepatically).
  • Cardiac disorders (risk of fluid retention and heart failure).
