Infanrix-IPV+Hib is a combination vaccine that protects against diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), poliomyelitis (polio), and Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) disease. It is given as a series of intramuscular injections and is recommended for children starting as young as 2 months old, with doses separated by at least four weeks.

What it protects against

Diphtheria: A serious infection that can cause a thick coating to form in the throat, leading to breathing problems.
Tetanus: Also known as lockjaw, it can cause painful muscle spasms, convulsions, and death.
Pertussis: A highly contagious respiratory infection, also known as whooping cough.
Poliomyelitis: A viral disease that can cause paralysis and other neurological problems.
Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib): A bacterium that can cause serious infections like pneumonia, meningitis, and epiglottitis.

Administration Method:

Intramuscular injection.

Location:
The anterolateral (front on the side) aspect of the thigh is preferred for infants, and the deltoid muscle of the upper arm is preferred for children older than 12 months.
Preparation:
The vaccine comes in a pre-filled syringe containing the Infanrix-IPV component and a separate vial containing Hib powder. These are mixed together just before administration.

Dosing schedule:
A primary vaccination schedule typically involves two or three doses, with subsequent doses spaced at least four weeks apart, according to official recommendations. A booster dose is also recommended.
Important considerations

Administration caution:
The vaccine should be given with caution to those with bleeding disorders, and pressure should be applied to the injection site for at least two minutes after the shot.

Contraindications:
The vaccine should not be given if a person has had a severe allergic reaction to any component of the vaccine or to previous doses of diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, or Hib vaccines. It is also contraindicated if an encephalopathy (a condition affecting the brain) of unknown cause occurred within 7 days of a previous pertussis-containing vaccine.
