Levixa (Levofloxacin Hemihydrate)
Levixa (Levofloxacin Hemihydrate)
Levofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the fluoroquinolone class, widely prescribed for the treatment of various bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting the bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, thus disrupting DNA replication and ultimately leading to bacterial cell death. Levofloxacin exhibits activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including strains resistant to other antibiotics, making it valuable for treating respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and certain types of bacterial sinusitis and pneumonia. It is available in oral and intravenous formulations, allowing for flexibility in administration depending on the severity and type of infection. However, levofloxacin is associated with a risk of serious side effects, including tendonitis and tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system effects such as seizures, so it should be used judiciously and reserved for situations where alternative antibiotics are not suitable.
