Meningococcal vaccine:
1. Types of Meningococcal Vaccines:
- There are three types of meningococcal vaccines used in the United States:
- Meningococcal conjugate or MenACWY vaccines:
- Examples include Menveo® and MenQuadfi®.
- These vaccines protect against meningococcal disease caused by serogroups A, C, W, and Y.
- Recommended for:
- All preteens and teens at 11 to 12 years old, with a booster dose at 16 years old.
- Children and adults at increased risk for meningococcal disease.
- Serogroup B meningococcal or MenB vaccines:
- Examples include Bexsero® and Trumenba®.
- These vaccines target serogroup B meningococcus.
- Recommended for:
- People 10 years or older at increased risk for meningococcal disease.
- Individuals receiving both MenACWY and MenB vaccines during the same visit.
- Pentavalent meningococcal or MenABCWY vaccine (Penbraya™):
- This vaccine provides protection against multiple serogroups (A, B, C, W, and Y).
- Recommended for:
- Individuals receiving both MenACWY and MenB vaccines during the same visit.
2. Effectiveness:
- Meningococcal vaccines are 85% to 100% effective for at least two years.
- They play a crucial role in preventing meningococcal meningitis, a potentially severe disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis bacteria.
