Paclitaxel, a chemotherapy medication derived from the bark of the Pacific yew tree (Taxus brevifolia). It belongs to the taxane class of antineoplastic agents and works by stabilizing microtubules, preventing their breakdown, which disrupts normal cell division and leads to cancer cell death.

Main Uses

Paclitaxel is used in the treatment of various cancers, including:

Breast cancer
Ovarian cancer
Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC)
Kaposi’s sarcoma (associated with AIDS)
Sometimes used in combination regimens for other solid tumors

Contraindications

Known hypersensitivity to Paclitaxel or other components (especially polyoxyethylated castor oil, Cremophor EL, used as a solvent).
Baseline neutrophil count <1,500 cells/mm³ (or <1,000 cells/mm³ in Kaposi’s sarcoma patients).
Severe uncontrolled infections.
