Panfor SR (Metformin)

Metformin is an oral antihyperglycemic medication belonging to the biguanide class. It is a sustained-release formulation designed to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Unlike insulin or sulfonylureas, it does not cause hypoglycemia when used alone. Metformin works primarily by reducing hepatic glucose production, enhancing peripheral glucose uptake, and improving insulin sensitivity.

Main Uses

• First-line therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus
• Helps lower blood sugar levels in overweight or obese patients
• May reduce risk of diabetes-related complications (neuropathy, nephropathy, retinopathy)
• Improves insulin sensitivity and decreases insulin resistance
• Sometimes used in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) (off-label, under physician guidance)

Contraindications

Metformin should not be used in patients with:

• Severe renal impairment (eGFR <30 mL/min/1.73 m²)
• Acute or chronic metabolic acidosis (including diabetic ketoacidosis)
• Severe liver disease or conditions predisposing to hypoxia (heart failure, respiratory failure, recent myocardial infarction, shock)
• History of lactic acidosis
• Excessive alcohol intake (due to increased risk of lactic acidosis)
• Known hypersensitivity to metformin or any component of the formulation
