Prevenar is a pneumococcal conjugate vaccine that protects against 13/20 strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. It helps prevent serious pneumococcal diseases including pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia in children and certain adults.
Recommended for infants and young children as part of standard immunization schedules, Prevenar is typically administered as a series of doses. It may also be given to older children, adolescents, and adults with specific risk factors or conditions that increase susceptibility to pneumococcal infection.
The vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against the most common disease-causing pneumococcal serotypes. Healthcare providers can determine appropriate vaccination timing and eligibility based on individual health status and risk factors.
