Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella (MMRV) vaccine:
1. What is MMRV Vaccine?
- The MMRV vaccine is a combination vaccine that protects against four diseases: measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox).
- It is used to help prevent these diseases in children between the ages of 12 months and 12 years old⁴.
2. Components and Effectiveness:
- Measles (M): Causes fever, cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, commonly followed by a rash that covers the whole body. It can lead to seizures (often associated with fever), ear infections, diarrhea, and pneumonia.
- Mumps: The vaccine is 78% effective in preventing mumps.
- Rubella: The vaccine is 97% effective in preventing rubella.
- Varicella (Chickenpox): The vaccine protects against chickenpox and is 97% effective in preventing it.
3. Vaccination Schedule:
- Children should receive one dose of MMRV vaccine at 12 through 15 months of age and the second dose at 4 through 6 years of age.
- Teens and adults should also be up to date on their MMR vaccination.
- MMRV vaccine is fully interchangeable with the M-M-R II and PRIORIX vaccines for all recommended indications.
