Rebamipide is a derivative of the amino acid 2-(1H)-quinolinone. It's utilized for protecting the mucosa, healing gastroduodenal ulcers, and treating gastritis. This compound enhances mucosal defense, scavenges free radicals, and temporarily activates genes that encode cyclooxygenase-2.
Use: It is a gastroprotective agent often used in combination with other therapies like proton pump inhibitors to treat gastritis and safeguard the gastric mucosa. It has been studied for its potential in treating stomach ulcers, keratoconjunctivitis sicca, gastric adenoma, and early gastric cancer.
