Epoetin injection helps treat anemia in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), whether they're on dialysis or not. It can also help prevent or treat anemia caused by surgery or other medications, such as those for HIV or cancer.
Typically, it is given once to three times a week. When used to reduce the need for blood transfusions due to surgery, it might be given once a day for 10 days before the surgery, on the day of the surgery, and for 4 days after the surgery.
Epoetin-alpha and epoetin-beta are similar in many ways, but epoetin-beta has a higher molecular weight and some potential benefits, like a longer duration in the body.
It's important to note that the safety and effectiveness of this treatment have not been established in children younger than 1 month with chronic kidney disease, whether they are on dialysis or not, and in children younger than 5 years with cancer. Epoetin alfa-epbx multi-dose vial should not be used in newborns or infants.
