Live Attenuated Pentavalent Rotavirus Vaccine is an oral vaccine designed to provide active immunization against rotavirus gastroenteritis, a leading cause of severe diarrhea and dehydration in infants and young children.
It contains five live attenuated human-bovine reassortant rotavirus strains representing the most common serotypes (G1, G2, G3, G4, and P1A[8]). By introducing these weakened viral strains, RotaTeq stimulates the immune system to produce protective antibodies without causing illness.
Main Uses:
- Prevention of rotavirus gastroenteritis caused by rotavirus serotypes G1, G2, G3, G4, and P1A[8]
- Active immunization of infants starting from 6 to 12 weeks of age
- Administered as a three-dose oral series at 4–10-week intervals
- Used in national immunization programs to prevent severe rotavirus-related illness
Contraindications:
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine or after a previous dose of rotavirus vaccine
- History of intussusception (a type of bowel obstruction)
- Severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) or other significant immunodeficiency disorders
- Acute severe illness, vomiting, or diarrhea at the time of vaccination — defer until recovery
- Infants with congenital gastrointestinal malformations predisposing to intussusception should not receive the vaccine
