Stafoban (Fucidic Acid)
Stafoban (Fucidic Acid)
Fucidic acid is a potent antibiotic with a narrow spectrum of activity primarily targeting bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus species. It works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, specifically by binding to elongation factor G (EF-G), thereby disrupting the translocation step of protein synthesis and ultimately halting bacterial growth. Fucidic acid is commonly used topically in the treatment of skin infections, such as impetigo and localized bacterial dermatitis, where Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis are frequently implicated pathogens. Its topical application allows for high local concentrations at the site of infection while minimizing systemic absorption and potential side effects. Fucidic acid is generally well-tolerated, with few reported adverse effects, making it a valuable option for the management of localized bacterial skin infections. However, its use should be limited to bacterial infections susceptible to its activity, and it should not be used for extended periods to prevent the development of resistance.
