Tetanus Diphtheria (Toxoid)

Tetanus Diphtheria (Toxoid) is a combined inactivated bacterial toxoid vaccine that provides active immunization against two serious infectious diseases — tetanus and diphtheria. It contains detoxified toxins (toxoids) produced by Clostridium tetani and Corynebacterium diphtheriae, which stimulate the immune system to form long-term protective antibodies without causing disease.

This vaccine is typically used as a booster dose for adolescents and adults to maintain immunity acquired during childhood vaccination. It helps prevent tetanus (characterized by muscle rigidity and spasms) and diphtheria (which affects the throat and respiratory system).

Main Uses:

• Active immunization against tetanus and diphtheria in individuals aged 7 years and older
• Booster dose following childhood DTP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis) vaccination
• Post-exposure prophylaxis for tetanus-prone injuries, in combination with tetanus immune globulin if needed

Contraindications:

• Known hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine, including aluminum hydroxide or formaldehyde
• Severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of tetanus or diphtheria-containing vaccine
• Acute severe febrile illness — vaccination should be deferred until recovery
• History of neurological complications (e.g., Guillain-Barré syndrome or brachial neuritis) following a prior tetanus toxoid vaccine should be considered with caution
