Twinrix is a combined hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccine approved for adults 18 years and older. This inactivated vaccine provides active immunization against hepatitis A virus and all known subtypes of hepatitis B virus in a single injection series.
The standard vaccination schedule consists of three 1 mL doses administered intramuscularly on a 0-, 1-, and 6-month timeline. An accelerated schedule is also available with four doses given on Days 0, 7, 21–30, followed by a booster at Month 12, suitable for travelers and those requiring faster protection.
Hepatitis A is a serious liver disease transmitted through close contact with infected persons or contaminated food and water. While most adults experience symptoms, protection is especially important for travelers, children, men who have sex with men, and those with specific risk factors. Hepatitis B is a chronic viral infection that can lead to serious liver complications; vaccination is recommended for unvaccinated adults up to age 59.
Common side effects include injection site soreness and redness. Headache and fatigue may occur after vaccination. The vaccine is contraindicated in individuals with severe allergic reactions to any hepatitis A or B vaccine component, including yeast and neomycin. Syncope (fainting) can occur with injectable vaccines; appropriate precautions should be observed.
