Ursoliv (Ursodeoxycholic Acid)

Ursodeoxycholic Acid (UDCA), also known as Ursodiol, is a naturally occurring bile acid used as a medication to dissolve cholesterol gallstones and to treat various liver and biliary disorders. It works by reducing cholesterol absorption, decreasing cholesterol secretion into bile, and improving bile flow. UDCA also has cytoprotective and immunomodulatory effects, making it useful in chronic liver diseases.

Main Uses

• Dissolution of cholesterol gallstones (in patients who are not candidates for surgery)
• Treatment of primary biliary cholangitis (PBC)
• Management of primary sclerosing cholangitis (off-label)
• Improvement of bile flow in cholestatic liver diseases
• Protection of liver cells from bile acid toxicity
• Supportive therapy in certain cases of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and drug-induced liver injury (off-label, under physician supervision)

Contraindications

Ursodeoxycholic Acid should not be used in patients with:

• Calcified or radiopaque gallstones (not cholesterol-based)
• Non-functioning gallbladder
• Acute inflammation of gallbladder or bile ducts
• Complete biliary obstruction
• Severe liver or pancreatic disorders
• Known hypersensitivity to Ursodeoxycholic Acid or any formulation component
• Pregnancy and lactation (unless prescribed by a physician)
