Valvir (Valganciclovir)

Valvir (Valganciclovir) is an antiviral medication prescribed to treat cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections in immunocompromised patients, including those with HIV/AIDS and organ transplant recipients. This FDA/DOH/WHO-recommended. This oral medication is a prodrug that converts to ganciclovir in the body, providing effective systemic antiviral activity against CMV.

Valganciclovir is primarily used to prevent CMV disease in high-risk transplant patients and to treat established CMV retinitis and gastrointestinal CMV disease. The medication works by inhibiting viral DNA polymerase, stopping CMV replication and reducing the severity and progression of infection.

Key therapeutic applications include CMV retinitis maintenance therapy in HIV-positive patients, CMV prophylaxis in solid organ and hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients, and treatment of active CMV disease in immunosuppressed individuals. The drug is typically administered orally, making it more convenient than intravenous ganciclovir alternatives.

Important considerations for use include regular monitoring of kidney function and blood cell counts, as valganciclovir can affect bone marrow and renal function. Patients should maintain adequate hydration and follow dosing adjustments based on creatinine clearance levels. The medication is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to valganciclovir or ganciclovir and requires careful management in patients with renal impairment.
