Varilrix (Live Attenuated Oka Strain of Varicella-Zoster)

The Live Attenuated Oka Strain of Varicella-Zoster Virus is a live attenuated viral vaccine developed for active immunization against varicella (chickenpox). It contains the Oka strain of the Varicella-Zoster virus, which has been weakened to safely trigger the body’s immune response without causing the disease.

By promoting the production of specific antibodies, this vaccine provides long-lasting protection against primary varicella infection and helps prevent serious complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and bacterial superinfection. It is effective for both pediatric and adult populations who have not had prior varicella infection or vaccination.

Main Uses:

• Prevention of varicella (chickenpox) in healthy individuals aged 12 months and older
• Immunization of non-immune adolescents and adults who have not had chickenpox
• May be used for post-exposure prophylaxis if administered within 3 days of exposure to the Varicella-Zoster virus

Contraindications:

• Hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine (including neomycin or gelatin)
• Immunocompromised patients, such as those with primary or acquired immunodeficiency (e.g., HIV infection, leukemia, lymphoma)
• Pregnant women (pregnancy should be avoided for at least one month after vaccination)
• Individuals with active febrile illness or untreated tuberculosis
• Previous severe allergic reaction to varicella-containing vaccines
