Vinrab (Equine anti-rabies immunoglobulin)

Passive immunization against rabies for the prevention of rabies for patients at risk post-exposure after contact with a rabid animal or presumed rabid animal. Equine anti-rabies immunoglobulin:

1. Purpose:
- Equine anti-rabies immunoglobulin (ERIG) is used for post-exposure prophylaxis in individuals exposed to rabies.
- It provides passive immunity by supplying antibodies against the rabies virus.

2. Availability and Cost:
- ERIG is less expensive than human rabies immunoglobulin (HRIG).
- However, ERIG production has been discontinued, and HRIG is often unaffordable in developing countries.

3. Administration:
- ERIG is derived from horse plasma and contains antibodies against rabies.
- It is used alongside rabies vaccines for optimal treatment.

4. Challenges:
- ERIG availability is limited, especially where canine rabies is endemic.
- In regions without ERIG or HRIG, vaccination schedules are used to induce antibody response, but treatment failures can occur.

5. Importance of Wound Cleaning and Canine Control:
- Early, aggressive wound cleansing is crucial.
- Efforts to control canine rabies are essential.

Each mL contains

• Equine anti-rabies immunoglobulin fragments consisting of not less than 200 I.U./mL;
• Cresol B.P < 0.25% v/v ;
• Glycine B.P. 22.50mg/mL
• Sodium chloride B.P. 9mg/mL;
• Water for injection B.P.

Countries with resources should consider manufacturing their own rabies immunoglobulins.
