Description: Cefalexin Monohydrate is an antibiotic, antibacterial treatment of infections. It is a first generation cephalosporin.
Indication/Use: It is used to treat against gram-positive, few gram-negative bacteria, by disrupting the formation of bacterial cell wall. For the treatment of infections of the urinary system and respiratory tract, as well as otitis media, skin infections, and other illnesses caused by sensitive organisms.
Dosage: The dose of cefalexin can vary depending on the infection and it should be taken exactly as directed by your doctor.
Adult: 1-2 g daily given in divided doses at 6-8 or 12 hourly intervals. For severe or deep-seated infections: can be increased to up to 6 g daily.
Children: 25 to 100 mg per Kg body weight daily in divided doses to maximum of 4 g/grams daily. For prophylaxis of recurrent urinary-tract-infection: 250 mg at night or as prescribed by the physician.
Contraindication: Patients allergic to cephalosporins.
Special Precaution: In patients with penicillin allergy, it should be taken with caution. Patients with severe renal impairment should take a lower dose. In certain patients, cefalexin might induce stomach pains and diarrhea, as well as allergic reactions such skin rashes.
Pregnancy & Lactation: Cefalexin is usually safe to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
