Description: Paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen, is a medication used to treat pain and fever.
Indication/Use: It is typically used for mild to moderate pain relief. Evidence is mixed for its use to relieve fever in children. It is often sold in combination with other medications, such as in many cold medications. Paracetamol is also used for severe pain, such as cancer pain and pain after surgery, in combination with opioid pain medication. It is typically used either by mouth or rectally, but is also available by injection into a vein. Effects last between two and four hours.
Dosage: For adults, take 1 tablet for mild symptoms and 2 tablets for moderate to severe symptoms (3 to 4 times per day, or as directed by your doctor). Oral Drops: Children 1-2 years: 1.2-1.8mL; Children 6 months to 1 year: 0.6-1.2mL; Infants under 6 months: 0.3-0.6mL (every four to six hours, or as directed by the doctors). For syrup, Infants: 2.5 mL (12 tsp); children aged1-3: 5.0 mL (1 tsp); children aged 3-6: 10 mL (2 tsp) (3 to 4 times a day, or as directed by a doctor). Soln for IV infusion: Patients over 50 kg may receive single doses of 1 g every 4 or more hours, up to a maximum of 4 g daily; patients between 33 and 50 kg may receive single doses of 15 mg/kg every 4 or more hours, up to a maximum of 60 mg/kg or 3 g daily (whichever is less) or as directed by a doctor. Paracetamol is administered intravenously over a 15-minute period.
Contraindication: Severe liver illness or liver impairment (IV).
Special Precaution: Patient with severe hypovolemia and dehydration (IV). liver and renal dysfunction. Children. breastfeeding and pregnancy. If you are using Warfarin or another blood clot prevention medicine, check with your doctor before taking Paracetamol.
Pregnancy & Lactation: Paracetamol is considered to be safe for use during lactation. For many years, pregnant women have used paracetamol without any clear negative consequences on the unborn child. Because of this, paracetamol is typically suggested as the primary option of painkiller for expectant mothers.
