Mycophenolate is a medicine that lowers your immune system’s activity. It is used with other medicines like cyclosporine and steroids for people who have had organ transplants (like kidney, heart, or liver transplants).
It can also make chemotherapy with temozolomide more effective by making cancer cells more sensitive to the treatment.
Mycophenolate is a type of mycophenolic acid (MPA) that works by reducing certain cells (T and B lymphocytes) in your immune system to prevent them from growing and forming antibodies.
Certain foods and supplements can affect how well mycophenolate works. For example, high-fat foods, deli meats, and antacids like Mylanta can interfere with it. Taking CellCept (another name for mycophenolate) on an empty stomach helps your body absorb it better.
The length of treatment varies depending on how well you respond. It may take several months to see any changes in your condition. If it works for you, you might need to take it long-term.
In a study, a combination of MMF (2.5 g/day) and prednisone (20 mg/day) was well-tolerated, and there were no significant changes in vital signs or lab results over 12 weeks.
If you have any signs of infection, stop using mycophenolate immediately. It has been linked to birth defects and pregnancy loss, so if you're pregnant or planning to get pregnant, talk to your doctor before starting this medication.
