Live Attenuated Oka Strain of Varicella-Zoster is a live attenuated viral vaccine developed to protect against varicella (chickenpox), an infectious disease caused by the Varicella-Zoster virus (VZV). The vaccine contains a weakened Oka strain of VZV that stimulates the immune system to produce antibodies, providing long-term protection against future infection.
It helps prevent both primary varicella infection and severe complications such as pneumonia, encephalitis, and secondary bacterial infections. It also plays a role in reducing community transmission and preventing outbreaks of chickenpox.
Main Uses:
- Active immunization for the prevention of varicella (chickenpox) in healthy individuals 12 months of age and older
- Recommended for non-immune adolescents and adults who have not had chickenpox or previous varicella vaccination
- Can be used as post-exposure prophylaxis if administered within a few days of exposure to VZV
Contraindications
- Hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine, including gelatin or neomycin
- Immunocompromised individuals (e.g., leukemia, lymphoma, HIV infection, or those receiving immunosuppressive therapy)
- Pregnancy (women should avoid pregnancy for at least one month after vaccination)
- Active febrile illness or untreated tuberculosis
- History of severe allergic reaction (e.g., anaphylaxis) to prior varicella vaccine doses
